The pink lotus  symbolizes the purity and wonder of our awakened Buddha nature.  Buddha simply means "One Who is Awakened."  Shakyamuni Buddha  is the most famous awakened person.  There have been many buddhas before him, and there have been many buddhas after him.  Everyone has the potential to become a buddha, it is only a matter of waiting for the right time.  The purpose of Dharma is to help us cultivate our mind with an inner sense of peace, joy and clarity.  This painting depicts the Buddha's right hand in the Dharma-wheel-turning gesture (giving teachings) and his left hand holding a begging bowl, symbol of infinite openness and receptiveness.  After the Buddha attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, he taught that all sentient beings possess Buddha Nature.  This realization brings hope and light to suffering beings.  (3/13/10)
