The pink lotus  symbolizes the purity and wonder of our awakened Buddha nature.  Buddha simply means "One Who is Awakened."  Shakyamuni Buddha  is the most famous awakened person.  There are many buddhas before him, and there are many buddhas after him.  Everyone has the potential to become a buddha, it is only a matter of waiting for the right time.  All things, both pleasant and unpleasant, will always arise and pass in our lives.  Impermanence is a simple fact of life.  If you are able to let go of your feelings of attachment and aversion, you are better equipped to deal with your emotions when the good things in life pass you by and the awful things come your way.  This painting depicts the Buddha  with his hands held in the Dharma-wheel-turning gesture (giving teachings).  Shakyamuni Buddha began teaching after having achieved enlightenment.  He taught that all sentient beings possess Buddha Nature.  This realization brings hope and light to suffering beings.   (3/19/10)
